Oh, a new season of Big Brother is here! I say that like I missed all of last week. In a way I did. Due to unfortunate financial situations, I'm not able to get live feeds right now. At the moment I am relying on all the great Twitter updates, feed recaps, and overnight posts. I give a thanks to the fine folks over at Big Brother Gossip for great updates and the awesome podcast. I also give a thanks to the always awesome Dingo over at Hamsterwatch. So before I start to sound like a house guests giving tons of shout-outs, let's get to it, shall we?
I know this is going to seem like an odd thing to start things off with, but I just wanted to talk a little bit about America's Favorite Former Almost Pro Baseball Player, Devin. Now a couple of things up front. One, everything I am writing is based completely on other people's reports of live feeds and things that may or may not have happened in the house. Could I be completely ill-informed? Absolutely! And two, like I said already, I don't have live feeds. One of the benefits of not having the live feeds is I don't have to hear someone going on and on about their daughter's birthday, so you'll have to have a little understanding on why I am not being completely harsh here. Finally, despite what I write here, I am not a fan of Devin. I can't stand the dude. Cocky and arrogant can be great in the Big Brother house, but like Caleb, he is cocky and arrogant in all the wrong ways. If he is back-doored next week, as is the current plan (as far as I know), then I won't shed a tear.
Now having said all of that, I can't help but feel a little sorry for the dude. He called a house meeting and went on again about his daughter, and wanted to play an honest game and be a good influence to his daughter. At first I had the same reaction everyone else had. What a tool. Look at this ass-hole trying to drum up sympathy or whatever he is doing, after just watching him bitch about Donnie doing the same thing! This guy just needs to go.
Then I was thinking about it some more (why?) and started to feel a little sympathy for Devin. He could be completely honest here. Allegedly, he wound up being cut or not picked up or suspended or whatever from baseball, and speculation is he was in rehab, possibly for some drug that is not steroids. Like I said, allegedly. It could be complete bullshit. But if it's not, there was a time when this guy went through some problems, and tried to fix his life. Good for him. He has a daughter (how old is she) that despite what some people may think, he genuinely loves. So he decides to go on this show, and yes, maybe show his daughter that he is a good man (like a two year old would really be able to tell at that age?) and play a solid game with integrity.
The game starts. The players enter. Right away a bunch of meathead alpha dogs band together and form the Bomb Squad. I can't help but think when you get in that kind of environment, you feel like you are on vacation (Hell, I think the girls think they are on vacation and don't realize they are on a game show!) and you cut loose. Devin starts bonding with the meatheads, that gang mentality starts to seep in. He starts getting that old dugout feeling like when he was on drugs and just kind of loses himself. Turns into a total asshole.
Eventually something happens, maybe him realizing that Donnie is who he says he is, maybe a brief moment of self awareness, whatever. But he realized that he has turned away from who he was outside the house when he was trying to be a good father, and quickly reverted back to the asshole, druggy, meathead jock he used to be. It hit him hard and he calls his awkward house meeting. He tries to be sincere, but like the other players actually should, they see weakness. Smell blood in the water.
Yes, Big Brother is a cutthroat game. That's the way I like it, and that's the way it should always be. I just need to remind myself that these people are still humans.
Or I could be totally wrong and just need to pull my head out of my ass.
